In our ongoing coverage of Lahaina's recovery from the wildfires, stories of resilience continue to emerge, breathing life and hope into a community rebuilding from the ashes. Today, we highlight the journey of Hawaiian Dollar, an initiative melding the craft of silversmithing with a steadfast commitment to Hawaii's environmental preservation.
Hawaiian Dollar transcends the conventional business model. Their focus is on offering a keepsake tourists can take home, which in this case, is a silver coin. However, each crafted silver coin isn't just a collector's item; it's a tangible commitment to conservation. It’s founder, Daniel Miranda, instituted a unique concept where every purchased coin equated to a square foot of Hawaii's pristine land being preserved. So, tourists didn't just take home a piece of exquisite artistry, but they also contributed to maintaining the island's breathtaking landscapes.
Yet, as the raging wildfires showed no mercy, Daniel and his family faced a profound loss. Their home, belongings, and the tangible aspects of the Hawaiian Dollar were reduced to ashes. But amidst this devastation, the ethos and vision of conservation that underpinned Hawaiian Dollar remained steadfast and unscathed.
In the shadow of the Lahaina wildfires, even as many grappled with loss, the spirit of support and unity emerged powerfully, especially within the digital corridors of the r/Wallstreetsilver subreddit. Many from this online enclave had come to appreciate the unique conservation mission behind Hawaiian Dollar and were deeply moved by the challenges faced by Daniel and his young family.
Recognizing an opportunity to make a difference, they organized a giveaway. But this wasn't just any fundraiser. Each silver round up for grabs wasn't solely about monetary support; it stood as a beacon of Hawaiian Dollar's core belief. Every piece symbolized a continued commitment to preserving a square foot of Hawaii's tranquil and cherished lands, seamlessly fusing financial assistance with the ethos of conservation.
Amid the devastation, Daniel's resolve remains unshaken. The pathway to restoration is steeped in challenges, yet every recovered coin represents a milestone toward renewal. Hawaiian Dollar's ethos, though tried by the fires, is resilient. The journey of reconstruction, for both the Miranda family and the preservation initiative, is incremental, marked by every coin sold.
Amid the devastation of the wildfires, each silver piece from Hawaiian Dollar becomes a potent symbol of Lahaina's enduring resilience. Every coin, be it scorched or pristine, tells the story of a community that stands unwavering amidst adversity.
You have an opportunity to be part of this narrative. By purchasing these unique coins, you're directly supporting Daniel's family and the broader mission of Hawaiian Dollar - the ongoing commitment to conserving the mesmerizing landscapes of Hawaii, even amidst intense trials and tribulations.

A developer has created a proof of concept for a cryptocurrency that they named CaptchaCoin. Currently in open beta, the project features caps - the unit of account - and logs - the unit of work - that are mined together at a certain ratio, typically 6 logs per 1/10th of a cap. Some users already have tens of thousands of caps, which corresponds with a six figure number of logs. That is a lot of work and takes quite awhile to earn. It does not appear that the captchas presented on the website are solvable by any AI model such as ChatGPT, which lends some credibility to it's potential as a future currency.
The creator of CaptchaCoin, Reddit user u/azop, is from the United Kingdom and has 10 years of experience in the crypto scene, offering technical analysis and even creating their own rainbow charts for Bitcoin.
The CaptchaCoin website has many features, including daily rewards based on the number of caps a user has mined and how many logs they still have - according to the creator of CaptchaCoin, logs decrease over time, so perhaps there is a direct conversion to bonus caps. Logs are needed to send caps to another user.
Another notable feature is the CaptchaCoin Casino, which allows users to commit an amount of their caps to buy lottery tickets for the chance to win more caps. Users are also given the choice to mine for charities, presumably under the premise that the caps will be cashed out and the proceeds donated, or perhaps even the caps themselves will be donated. We think there should be a charity beneficial to the people of Lahaina on their site.
Influencers can create Simple Paywalls and Donation Wallets, both of which allow subscribers and fans to solve captchas in exchange for caps sent directly to the influencer's wallet. When a user has mined enough caps, they are presented with a link to the project's Telegram group, as a method of authenticating users and preventing spam messages. This works because then the user has skin in the game and therefore no motive to spam or subvert the group, and the project can progress in an efficient manner. Even though pre-launch caps can be purchased at a price of 10 cents each, it is recommended to only acquire them via mining to both help kickstart the network and minimize potential loss. With that said, mining CaptchaCoin may be a good investment of time for anyone displaced by the Maui fires and anyone interested should join and help lodge the aforementioned petition to benefit Lahaina.

This catastrophic event, while immensely devastating, has unveiled an opportunity to fortify a future where the alliance of conservation and community stands resilient and unassailable. Each coin, each gesture of support, and every step forward not only underscores Lahaina's unwavering resilience but also breathes life and hope into a narrative marked by preservation and community unity.
